Jefferson church hosting Blessing Bag event to help fill global hunger gaps

Jefferson First United Methodist Church will host a rice and soy Blessing Bag event Saturday, May 31, in partnership with Midwest Mission. The event will take place from 12 to 2 pm at Midwest Mission Iowa, 219 N Chestnut, Jefferson.

Volunteers will pack meals for communities in need. Recent funding cuts have left schools and nonprofits around the world struggling to feed the hungry, and Midwest Mission is stepping up to help fill the gaps. Each Blessing Bag contains rice, soy, vitamins, and vegetables that help meet the nutritional needs of those who receive them. These meals are often the only food people receive in a day.

This local effort is part of a broader mission. In 2025, Midwest Mission aims to pack 200,000 rice and soy Blessing Bags to support communities around the world facing food insecurity. Achieving this ambitious goal depends on the support of volunteers and churches willing to host packing events like this one.

“These meals do more than nourish bodies—they offer hope,” said Danille Curtis, director of Midwest Mission Iowa. “We invite the community to come alongside us and be part of the solution.”

Walk-ins are welcome, but to help plan more effectively, those who plan to attend are asked to call ahead at 515-386-2236.
